Planting of winter cover crops is a practice being tried by farmers in many regions, driven partly by government incentives. Cover crops could have many benefits, but there are many aspects of their effects that we still do not understand well. In a recent paper we show how remote sensing and causal inference can be used to study the impacts on several outcomes, including yields, delays in sowing, and prevented planting.
